Copy editing is meant to review and edit a document to improve its readability and clarity. The text is checked for errors in sentence structure, grammar, spelling, verb tense agreement, missing words or repetitions, and typos. In addition to that, there is a larger focus on consistency of writing style, discrepancies in story elements (plot, setting, and character traits), smoothing awkward passages and transitions, clarifying ambiguous sentences, and generally ensuring that the writer’s creation is as they intended it to be.
Proofreading is meant to be a final check of a previously reviewed and edited text prior to publishing. This consists of a single pass through the document checking for typos, word repetition, spelling errors, verb tense agreement, punctuation and grammatical errors.
